All Cricket World Cup Winner List with Final Result and Score

Every four years, the ICC ODI Cricket World Cup gives fans a new champion to remember. But when you put all the editions together, the story becomes even more interesting. Some teams dominated for years, some waited decades for another trophy, and a few came painfully close without ever winning it.

The first men's ODI World Cup was played in 1975. The latest one was held in 2023. Here is the full list of world cup winners, runners-up and final match summary.

Australia's name appears six times in the winner's column. That is the most by any team. India and West Indies have won twice each. England, Pakistan and Sri Lanka have one title apiece.

The Early Years Were All About West Indies:

If someone had tried to predict the future of the World Cup after the first two editions, West Indies would probably have been the obvious team to pick.

They won in 1975 and 1979.

The first final, played at Lord's, saw Clive Lloyd hit a century as West Indies beat Australia by 17 runs. Four years later, England were beaten by 92 runs.

Then came 1983, and the script changed.

India were up against the same West Indies team that had won the first two tournaments. India made only 183. It looked like a chase West Indies should handle.

Instead, they were bowled out for 140.

Kapil Dev's India had their first World Cup.

Australia Slowly Turned into the Record Holder:

Australia's first trophy arrived in 1987 after a seven-run win over England.

But the real Australian era came later.

They won in 1999, 2003 and 2007. Three World Cups back-to-back.

The 2003 final against India was particularly one-sided. Ricky Ponting made 140 not out and Australia finished on 359/2. India were bowled out for 234.

Four years later, Australia beat Sri Lanka in Barbados to complete the hat-trick.

That 1999 - 2007 stretch remains one of the defining periods in World Cup cricket.

Pakistan and Sri Lanka Had Their Turn:

Pakistan's only World Cup title came in 1992. Imran Khan's team beat England by 22 runs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Pakistan had started the tournament poorly, but their campaign changed as the knockout stage approached.

Sri Lanka went one step further in 1996. Their final against Australia was a different kind of match. Sri Lanka chased 242 with seven wickets remaining, with Aravinda de Silva scoring 107 not out.

That remains Sri Lanka's only men's ODI World Cup victory.

India's Two Titles Tell Two Different Stories:

India's first and second World Cup wins were separated by 28 years.

The 1983 final was about defending a small total against a dominant West Indies side. The 2011 final was a chase under huge pressure at home.

Sri Lanka scored 274/6 in Mumbai. Gautam Gambhir made 97 and MS Dhoni stayed unbeaten on 91.

    Then came the six.

India won by six wickets and lifted the trophy in front of a home crowd.

    England Finally Got Its Trophy:

England had been runners-up in 1979, 1987 and 1992. It took until 2019 to finally win the World Cup.

And even then, the final refused to produce a straightforward finish.

England and New Zealand both made 241. The Super Over also ended tied. England were eventually declared winners under the boundary-countback rule being used at the time.

New Zealand were runners-up again, just as they had been four years earlier.

    2023: Australia Gets Number Six:

The most recent men's ODI World Cup final was played in Ahmedabad.

India had been unbeaten throughout the tournament and came into the final with 10 wins. Australia had recovered from a difficult start and reached the final after beating South Africa.

India were bowled out for 240.

Travis Head then produced the innings Australia needed. His 137 helped Australia reach 241/4, winning the final by six wickets.

It was Australia's sixth World Cup.

World Cup Titles: The Short Version:

Team Number of Titles Years to Win
    Australia 6 1987, 1999, 2003, 2007, 2015, 2023
    India 2 1983, 2011
    West Indies 2 1975, 1979
    England 1 2019
    Pakistan 1 1992
    Sri Lanka 1 1996

There is one obvious omission: New Zealand. The Black Caps have reached two finals, in 2015 and 2019, but are still waiting for their first World Cup trophy.
