England Made Their Intentions Clear in the Opening Match
England and India played the first match of the World Cup at Lord's on 7 June 1975. England scored 334/4, which was an enormous total for the time. Dennis Amiss made 137 and Keith Fletcher added 68.
India's reply never really got going. They finished on 132/3, giving England a 202-run victory.
The Indian innings did have one unusual talking point. Sunil Gavaskar batted through the innings and finished unbeaten on 36. It was a strange-looking scorecard by modern standards, particularly because India were chasing 335 in a World Cup match.
That same day also saw New Zealand beat East Africa by 181 runs. Glenn Turner scored 171 not out, setting the highest individual score of the tournament.
Australia defeated Pakistan by 73 runs, while West Indies beat Sri Lanka by nine wickets. So the first day alone gave the tournament four very different matches.
Team Played - Group A: England and New Zealand Go Through
England were the only unbeaten team in the group. After beating India, they defeated New Zealand by 80 runs and then East Africa by 196 runs.
New Zealand lost to England but recovered with victories over East Africa and India. That was enough to send them into the semi-finals alongside England.
India beat East Africa by 10 wickets but lost their other two matches.
Group A Team Record
Team Matches Wins Losses England 3 3 0 New Zealand 3 2 1 India 3 1 2 East Africa 3 0 3 East Africa were one of the less familiar sides in the tournament and finished without a win. For India, the defeat to New Zealand on 14 June ended their campaign.
West Indies Had a Much Closer Route Through Group B
Group B had a different feel. It included West Indies, Australia, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and two of the matches were particularly close.
West Indies started with a comfortable nine-wicket win against Sri Lanka. Australia beat Pakistan by 73 runs in their first game.
Then came West Indies against Pakistan. Pakistan scored 266/7. West Indies were in serious trouble during the chase, but they somehow got over the line at 267/9. The margin? One wicket. That match turned out to be one of the closest games of the tournament.
Australia later scored 328/5 against Sri Lanka, while Pakistan responded with the tournament's second-highest total, making 330/6 against Sri Lanka. West Indies eventually finished the group unbeaten.
Group B Team Record:
Team Matches Wins Losses West Indies 3 3 0 Australia 3 2 1 Pakistan 3 1 2 Sri Lanka 3 0 3 West Indies and Australia therefore moved into the semi-finals.
Australia Nearly Lost After Bowling England Out for 93
The first semi-final looked finished when England were dismissed for just 93. Then Australia made things interesting.
Gary Gilmour ripped through the English batting order and finished with 6/14. Australia should have had a straightforward chase, but instead they slipped to 39/6.
Gilmour wasn't finished. He came in to bat and helped Australia get across the line. They reached 94/6 and won by four wickets.
It remains one of the more bizarre scorecards from the first World Cup: England made 93, Australia lost six wickets for 39, and yet Australia still won the match.
West Indies Beat New Zealand to Reach the Final
The other semi-final was played between New Zealand and West Indies. New Zealand made 158, with Geoff Howarth scoring 51.
West Indies did not need a huge chase. Gordon Greenidge and Alvin Kallicharran both made half-centuries, and West Indies reached 159/5.
The five-wicket victory put them into the first World Cup final against Australia.
The 1975 World Cup Final: West Indies vs Australia
The final took place at Lord's on 21 June 1975.
West Indies were under pressure early, slipping to 50/3 before Clive Lloyd came to the crease. Lloyd counterattacked with 102 from 85 balls, while Rohan Kanhai scored 55. West Indies finished their 60 overs at 291/8.
Australia stayed in the chase for much of their innings. Captain Ian Chappell scored 62, but wickets continued to fall.
At 233/9, Australia still had a chance. Jeff Thomson and Dennis Lillee then added 41 runs for the tenth wicket, briefly bringing the match back into contention.
Eventually, Thomson was run out, and Australia were dismissed for 274 in 58.4 overs. West Indies won by 17 runs and became the first men's Cricket World Cup champions.

Three Players Who Left a Mark on the Tournament:
Looking only at the final result can make the 1975 World Cup seem fairly straightforward. The individual performances tell a different story.
Glenn Turner New Zealand's Glenn Turner scored 333 runs, including an unbeaten 171 against East Africa. He also made 114 not out against India, becoming the tournament's leading run-scorer.
Gary Gilmour Gilmour played only two matches but finished with 11 wickets. His 6/14 against England helped Australia reach the final after a dramatic semi-final.
Clive Lloyd Lloyd's 102 from 85 balls turned the final in West Indies' favour. His century came after the team had slipped to 50/3 and became the defining batting performance of the championship match.
Each player made a different kind of impact, helping make the first World Cup memorable beyond the final result.
How Different Was the First World Cup?
The 1975 tournament was smaller than today's editions. It featured eight teams, 60 overs per innings, and just 15 matches across a little more than two weeks.
Modern World Cups involve more teams and a longer schedule, but the essentials were already there: pressure, big totals, dramatic collapses, and individual performances that could decide a match.
The final captured all of that. West Indies were 50/3 before Lloyd's century changed the innings. Australia then fell to 233/9 before Thomson and Lillee briefly revived their hopes. A run-out ended the resistance, and West Indies claimed the first World Cup trophy.
