ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 Results: All Matches, Scores and Winners

The ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 finished with Australia lifting the trophy at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. But if you remember the tournament only for that final, you are missing quite a bit.

New Zealand went through the group stage unbeaten. India did the same. South Africa finally won a World Cup knockout match before falling in one of the most dramatic semi-finals ever played. Chris Gayle hit 215, Martin Guptill answered with 237*, and South Africa twice crossed 400.

Played in Australia and New Zealand from 14 February to 29 March 2015, the tournament had 14 teams and 49 matches. The top four from each pool qualified for the quarter-finals. Afghanistan also appeared in a World Cup for the first time.

The group stage alone produced some ridiculous numbers. Australia reached 417/6, South Africa made 408/5 and 411/4, while eight matches produced at least 600 runs between the two teams. The overall run rate during the pool stage was 5.63 per over.

India and New Zealand Started With Perfect Records:

India's group campaign was straightforward compared with what happened to them in some previous World Cups.

They beat Pakistan by 76 runs, then defeated South Africa, UAE, West Indies and Ireland. The win over South Africa was particularly convincing: India made 307/7 and bowled their opponents out for 177.

New Zealand were just as difficult to stop.

They beat Sri Lanka by 98 runs in the opening match, survived a one-wicket thriller against Australia and finished Pool A unbeaten.

That Australia-New Zealand match was a strange one. Australia were bowled out for 151, and New Zealand somehow made 152/9. One more wicket and the whole thing could have looked very different.

Gayle's 215 Was Only the Beginning:

Chris Gayle's 215 against Zimbabwe became one of the images of the tournament.

He hit 215 from 147 balls, including 16 sixes. It was the first double-century in World Cup history.

For a while, that looked like a record that might survive the tournament.

    It did not.

A few weeks later, New Zealand's Martin Guptill smashed 237 not out against West Indies in the quarter-final. He broke Gayle's record and took New Zealand to 393/6.

Guptill's innings remains the highest individual score in a men's World Cup match.

    The Quarter-finals:

    Quarter-final Score Result
South Africa vs Sri Lanka.SL 133, SA 134/1.SA won by 9 wickets.
India vs Bangladesh.IND 302/6, BAN 193.India won by 109 runs.
New Zealand vs West Indies.NZ 393/6, WI 250.NZ won by 143 runs.
Australia vs Pakistan.PAK 213, AUS 216/4.AUS won by 6 wickets.

South Africa finally got through a World Cup knockout game, beating Sri Lanka by nine wickets.

India had little trouble with Bangladesh, with Rohit Sharma scoring 137 as India reached 302/6.

    Then came Guptill.

His 237* was enough to make the West Indies chase 394, which they never seriously threatened.

Australia had the least dramatic quarter-final on paper, beating Pakistan by six wickets.

South Africa Were One Ball Away:

The first semi-final became the match many fans remember most from the knockout stage.

South Africa made 281/5 from 43 overs after rain interrupted their innings. AB de Villiers finished unbeaten on 65 from 45 balls, while David Miller smashed 49 from just 18.

New Zealand's revised target was 298.

Brendon McCullum came out swinging and made 59 from 26 balls. New Zealand kept losing wickets, though, and South Africa had their chances.

Grant Elliott stayed until the end.

With New Zealand needing five from two balls, Dale Steyn bowled the penultimate delivery. Elliott hit it for six.

New Zealand had reached their first World Cup final.

Australia Had Too Much for India:

The second semi-final was a different sort of game.

Australia posted 328/7, with Steve Smith making a century and Aaron Finch helping him build a big partnership.

India's chase never really got going.

Mitchell Johnson and James Faulkner led the Australian attack as India were bowled out for 233. Australia won by 95 runs and earned a place in the final.

Australia vs New Zealand: The Final:

New Zealand had beaten Australia by one wicket earlier in the tournament.

The final at the MCG went the other way from the first over.

Mitchell Starc bowled Brendon McCullum for a duck. New Zealand's captain had been one of the main reasons they had played such aggressive cricket throughout the tournament, so losing him immediately was a huge setback.

New Zealand were eventually dismissed for 183 in 45 overs.

    Australia needed only 184.

Michael Clarke scored 74 from 72 balls in his final ODI appearance, while Steve Smith remained unbeaten on 56. Australia reached 186/3 in just 33.1 overs.

The World Cup was theirs for the fifth time.

A World Cup Built Around Big Scores:

The numbers tell an interesting story.

Australia's 417/6 against Afghanistan was the highest total. South Africa came close twice with 408/5 and 411/4. The pool stage also produced 35 centuries and 388 sixes by the halfway point, showing just how heavily the tournament leaned towards attacking batting.

But the knockout stage brought a different mood.

South Africa needed a last-ball six to stay out of the final. New Zealand made 393/6 and still had to wait for the semi-final to find out whether their aggressive approach would take them all the way.

Australia were the team that handled the final step.

For Michael Clarke, it was also the end of his ODI career. He left the field after scoring 74 in the final, while Australia celebrated a fifth World Cup title.
