ICC World Cup 1999 All Match Results, Scores and Point Table

Australia won the 1999 Cricket World Cup, but they certainly did not look like champions at the beginning.

They lost to New Zealand and Pakistan in the group stage and were under pressure before the tournament had really settled. Pakistan, meanwhile, looked strong for most of the competition and eventually reached the final at Lord's. Then they were bowled out for 132.

Australia won that final by eight wickets.

The 1999 World Cup was played in England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland and the Netherlands. Twelve teams played 42 matches, with the competition running from 14 May to 20 June. It was also the tournament that produced the famous tied semi-final between Australia and South Africa.

Here are all the results, followed by the matches and moments that shaped the tournament.

    Australia Had Work to Do:

Australia's first three matches tell you quite a lot about their campaign. They beat Scotland, lost to New Zealand and then lost to Pakistan by 10 runs. The Pakistan defeat was particularly frustrating. Australia made 265 while chasing 276 and were eventually bowled out. At that point, their eventual title defence did not look particularly convincing.

They recovered against Bangladesh and West Indies, though, and the win over India in the Super Six stage put them back on track. Then came South Africa.

Australia needed to win, and Steve Waugh produced one of the innings that defined the tournament. Chasing 272, Australia were in trouble at 48/3. Waugh stayed there until the end, making 120 not out. Australia won with two balls left.

It was not a comfortable campaign. They just kept finding ways through.

    Bangladesh Beat Pakistan:

Bangladesh's win over Pakistan was one of the results that people did not see coming. Bangladesh made 223/9 at Northampton. Pakistan had the players to chase that score, but their batting never really got going. They were all out for 161. Bangladesh won by 62 runs.

For Bangladesh, it was more than just another group-stage victory. It was their first major World Cup upset and one of the clearest signs that the newer teams could cause problems for established sides.

India's Tournament Had Plenty of Runs:

India did not have a smooth World Cup either. They lost to South Africa and Zimbabwe early, which put them under pressure. But they also produced some of the biggest batting performances of the competition.

Against Kenya, India made 329/2. Against Sri Lanka, they went even higher, scoring 373/6. Sourav Ganguly made 183 in that innings, while Rahul Dravid also passed fifty.

India later beat Pakistan by 47 runs in the Super Six stage. Dravid ended the tournament with 461 runs, the highest total by any batsman in the competition. His consistency was one of the few steady features of India's campaign. It still wasn't enough to get them into the semi-finals.

Then Came the Australia-South Africa Classic:

The semi-final at Edgbaston had almost everything you could ask for from a one-day international. Australia made 213. South Africa also made 213. So the match was tied.

But the last over is what turned it into cricket history. Lance Klusener had taken South Africa to the edge of victory. With one run needed, he hit another boundary and then called for the winning run. Allan Donald was at the other end. There was confusion. Donald dropped his bat and was run out.

South Africa had not lost the match, but they still failed to reach the final. Australia advanced because they had finished higher than South Africa in the Super Six standings. It remains one of the most unusual endings to a World Cup knockout match.

Pakistan Looked Ready for the Final:

Pakistan had been one of the stronger teams throughout the tournament. They beat Australia in the group stage, defeated New Zealand by 62 runs and then met New Zealand again in the semi-final.

That second meeting was much easier for Pakistan. They made 242/1 after New Zealand had scored 241/7. Saeed Anwar finished unbeaten on 133. Pakistan won by nine wickets and headed to Lord's for the final. At that point, they looked like a team capable of winning the trophy.

The final told a completely different story.

The Final Was Over Surprisingly Quickly:

Pakistan won the toss and batted first. It went badly. They were bowled out for only 132 in 39 overs. Shane Warne took four wickets, while Australia's other bowlers kept the pressure on throughout the innings.

Australia did not need a huge chase. Adam Gilchrist attacked from the start and scored 54 from only 36 balls. Mark Waugh then helped finish the job. Australia reached 133/2 in just 20.1 overs. Eight wickets left. The World Cup was Australia's.

What Made the 1999 World Cup Different?

It wasn't a tournament where one team simply walked through everyone else. Australia lost twice before reaching the final. Pakistan, who had beaten Australia earlier, collapsed in the final. Bangladesh knocked Pakistan over in the group stage.

South Africa had Australia beaten in the semi-final for long periods, only for the match to end in a tie. Even India had some huge scores but couldn't turn them into a semi-final place.

A few matches ended up being remembered more for their final few minutes than for the score itself. The Australia-South Africa semi-final is the obvious example.

And for Australia, the 1999 trophy became the start of something much bigger. They would win the next two World Cups as well, in 2003 and 2007. But the 1999 title was the difficult one. They had to recover from a poor start, survive the Super Six stage and get through a tied semi-final. Only then did they get to celebrate at Lord's.
